Maya Cohen was born in Israel and raised in Los Angeles right around the corner from Shalhevet! Maya completed her BA in Liberal Studies and received her teaching degree from California State University of Northridge. Upon completion, she began teaching in the Jewish School system and hasn't stopped since. Maya went to New York to pursue her studies in Child Psychology at Hunter College. While in NYC, she taught at Park East Day School, Rodeph Sholom School and Ethical Culture Fieldston School. Maya thoroughly enjoyed her ten years teaching 4th grade, but found her true passion during her one on one work with students with learning differences. It was in Manhattan where Maya met her husband Neil and had her three kids - Atara, Aviva and Shaya. After many years in New York, she and her family decided to relocate back to Los Angeles to be closer to family. Maya began working in the Admissions Department at Harkham Hillel Hebrew Academy, where she was able to reconnect with old friends, make new ones and was thrilled to be a part of the Los Angeles Jewish community once again. When Maya isn't working, she loves giving back to the community by spending time volunteering at various foster care centers and transitional homes for women and children; however her favorite volunteer work has always been in the NICU and the children's hospital. Maya is excited to begin her 25th year in education, thrilled to join the awesome Shalhevet family and is looking forward to attending her very first famous Shalhevet town hall! |
